The 21st World Congress of Chinese Medicine was opened at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, France

On October 25, 2024, the 21st World Congress of Chinese Medicine (21st WCCM), hosted by the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS), was grandly opened in Hall I of the UNESCO House in Paris, France.
 
With the theme of "Encouraging the Convergence of East-West Civilizations, and Promoting the Global Sharing of Chinese Medicine", the 21st WCCM attracted nearly 1000 traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) experts, scholars, government officials and business representatives from 34 countries and regions, including China, Singapore, the United States, Australia, France, Japan, Brazil, Canada, Thailand, Spain, Greece, New Zealand, Italy, Argentina, Germany, Cambodia, Bulgaria, Russia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Mozambique, Vietnam, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, San Marino, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong China, Macao China and Taiwan China. The opening ceremony and keynote speeches were broadcasted globally through the official platform of UNESCO, the WFCMS WeChat Video Account, ChinaNet+platform, Baidu Live platform, and Weibo platform, with over 5 million views.
 
Mr. Zhang Boli, Vice President of the WFCMS and Academician of the CAE Member, Ms. Wu Wanlin, President of the Centre France Chine de la Médecine Chinoise (CFCMC), Mr. Huang Luqi, Deputy Director of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM) of China and Academician of the CAE Member, attended the opening ceremony and delivered welcome speeches. Mr. Qu Xing, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Chen Li, Minister of the Chinese Embassy in France, Ms. Yang Xinyu, Ambassador Representative of China to the UNESCO, Ms. Li Yachan, Traditional Medicine Officer of the World Health Organization (WHO), Ms. Josiane Gaude, Mr. Éric Alauzet, Former Chairman of France China Friendship in the French National Assembly and Co-Chair of the Sponsors Committee for the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between France and China, Mr. Cheng Jie, President of Dong-E-E-Jiao Co., Ltd, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The opening ceremony was co-hosted by Ms. Xu Chunbo, Vice Secretary General of the WFCMS, and Mr. Cheng Xiaolin, Vice Chairman of the CFCMC.
 
WFCMS Vice President Zhang Boli pointed out in his welcome speech that, currently, TCM has spread to 196 countries and regions around the world, becoming an important area of cooperation between China and ASEAN, EU, AU, Latin American and Caribbean Community, SCO, BRICS and other regions and mechanisms. The number of people who have received treatment with TCM, including acupuncture and moxibustion and massage, has reached more than 1/3 of the world's total population. TCM has become an important part of building a human health community. Especially in the face of the COVID-19 test, TCM delivered an excellent answer. He stated that the 21st WCCM is an international conference for TCM brands hosted by the WFCMS. It has been successfully held for 20 sessions around the world. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, and the 33rd Summer Olympic Games have just been successfully held in Paris. On this occasion, the 21st WCCM was grandly held in Paris, which is of great significance, extensively exchanges and collaborates with experts and scholars in TCM from around the world to promote development and create brilliance. He expected that all the participants would work hard, move forward courageously, promote the inheritance and innovative development of TCM, and make greater contributions to promoting high-quality inheritance and development of TCM, promoting human health, and improving global health governance.
 

Welcome speech by Mr. Zhang Boli, Vice President of WFCMS

CFCMC President Ms. Wu Wanlin gave speech that, today, TCM has  received increasing attention and recognition worldwide, and we are shouldering the historical mission of promoting its wider application. Since its establishment in 2018, the CFCMC has been committed to building a bridge for medical interaction between China and France, promoting the dissemination and development of TCM worldwide, and aiming to promote the application and promotion of TCM on the international stage through scientific research cooperation, disease prevention and treatment, talent cultivation and other practical aspects. The Center actively responds to China's "the Belt and Road" initiative, strives to build an international integrated medical platform, and promotes the industrialization, standardization and internationalization of TCM.
 

Welcome speech by Ms. Wu Wanlin, President of CFCMC

NATCM Deputy Director Huang Luqi stated that, TCM has spread to 196 countries and regions. China has signed specialized cooperation agreements with more than 40 foreign governments, regional regulatory agencies, and international organizations on TCM, and has launched a number of high-quality overseas centers for TCM; The International TCM Clinical Trial Registration Platform established by the Chinese Center for Evidence Based Medicine has become the WHO's international first level clinical trial registration institution. The International Standardization Organization has released 113 high-quality international standards for TCM. "Acupuncture and moxibustion of TCM", "Tibetan Medicine Bath Method" and "Taijiquan" have been included in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Human Beings, and "Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine", "Compendium of Materia Medica" and "Four Medical Classics" have been included in the Memory of the World List. During the COVID-19, TCM provided Chinese wisdom and Chinese programs for the global epidemic prevention and control. The WHO experts assessment meeting on COVID-19 infection confirmed the safety and effectiveness of TCM treatment. TCM has become a beautiful business card for deepening cultural exchanges and a new growth pole for health cooperation. As one of the world's largest academic organizations in TCM, the WFCMS has taken multiple measures to promote international exchanges and cooperation in TCM, contributing to the open development of TCM. The 21st WCCM has provided a high-level stage for global managers and practitioners of TCM to share wisdom, exchange and cooperate.

Mr. Qu Xing, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, stated that in the Recommendation adopted by UNESCO in 2021, cooperation at the international level is actively encouraged to address contemporary challenges through various forms of knowledge. There are many examples that show traditional medicine can contribute to modern medicine, such as the widely recognized research results of Chinese researcher Tu Youyou, who used TCM as inspiration to tackle malaria and won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine and the 2019 UNESCO Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Life Sciences Research. it’s expected that the 21st WCCM would build more bridges between traditional and modern medicine, so that more people can benefit from the wisdom of TCM.

Mr. Chen Li, Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy in France, stated in his speech that Chinese civilization is an important part of world civilization, and TCM, as an outstanding representative of Chinese civilization, is a medical science gradually formed and continuously enriched by the Chinese people of all ethnic groups through thousands of years of production, life practice, and disease struggle. Not only has it made outstanding contributions to the reproduction and growth of the Chinese nation, but it has also had a positive impact on the progress of world civilization. The Chinese government attaches great importance to and strongly supports the development of TCM. The combination of Chinese and Western medicine, as well as the integration of Chinese and Western medicine, has become an important feature and significant advantage of China's unique medical, health and wellness industry. At the same time, in order to better benefit the world and the people, the Chinese government has always attached great importance to and actively promoted the global development of TCM.

Ms. YANG Xinyu, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the People's Republic of China to UNESCO, stated that China has played an important role in the global development of traditional medicine, promoting overall health and rooted in the principle of harmony between humans and nature, which is still applicable today. In recent years, the world has paid increasing attention to traditional medicine, and new research has also proven the effectiveness of these therapies, especially in dealing with diseases such as hypertension. In terms of antibiotic resistance, traditional medicine can provide supplementary methods, reduce dependence on synthetic chemicals, and provide hope for sustainable health solutions in the future. UNESCO is committed to promoting global cooperation and prosperity. China attaches great importance to UNESCO's responsibilities and firmly supports its goals. Over the past few decades, our cooperation has achieved important results, especially in promoting education, science, and culture, actively promoting peace and sustainable development in developing countries.

WHO Officer Li Yachan stated in her speech that the development of traditional medicine in China is remarkable. China emphasizes high-quality development, which not only improves accessibility but also enhances service quality. The establishment of TCM hospitals and the expansion of TCM services to the community level have significantly improved medical services and accessibility nationwide. These achievements are closely aligned with the broader goals of the WHO, which are to integrate traditional medicine into national health systems, particularly primary healthcare, improve accessibility of health services, and enhance the resilience of health systems. China has set an example for the development of traditional medicine.

Ms. Josiane Gaude, Representative of the French Minister of Culture and First Deputy Mayor of Paris 7th Arrondissement, said that the 21st WCCM  is a very important platform that can promote exchanges between TCM, modern medicine, and Western civilization. In the context of globalization, TCM is backed by traditional lifestyles and philosophies. The global development of TCM can bring benefits to people around the world, while also promoting cultural exchange between the East and the West, and promoting the health of people around the world.

Mr. Éric Alauzet, Former Chairman of France China Friendship in the French National Assembly and Co-Chair of the Sponsors Committee for the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between France and China, said that TCM can bridge the relationship between humans and nature, transcend boundaries, and bring benefits to people around the world. Infectious diseases such as the COVID-19 are important challenges that we are facing now. By participating in the treatment of infectious diseases globally, we will bring the international community closer and promote global development.
