China sent its first medical workers to Benin in 1978, and over the last 45 years their selfless spirit and kindness in sharing medical knowledge and skills have been admired by the Benin government and its people, said Tossou Pacome, president of the Mono-Couffo Departmental Hospital Center. The many donations promoted health development and improved conditions at hospitals, Pacome said.

On Aug 5 last year, the 26th Chinese medical team to aid Benin arrived, with 22 members from the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. Over the last year, they have offered free treatment and drugs, served patients with traditional Chinese medicine and taught local doctors TCM. They also conducted remote academic exchanges and online guidance on surgeries. In June, they donated medical supplies and equipment.

Ningxia has sent 616 doctors to treat about 3 million patients with common diseases. They also treated patients with serious illnesses and performed difficult surgeries.

With Benin's hot weather, humid climate and mosquitoes, doctors work to prevent infectious diseases such as malaria, typhoid and AIDS, and they sometimes do their work when water and power supplies are off. Local government awarded members of Chinese teams medals of honor 32 times.

Li Furong, the leader of the team, said China and Benin have a deep friendship characterized by long-term cooperation in the medical sector. Team members will continue to offer medical aid to protect life and health, and will continue to enhance exchanges with local doctors, Li said.
